Fesman2009

The art of photography in Fesman 2009
photoWithin the framework of Fesman, a call for projects has been launched in the domain of photography. Propose your works starting right now!
Photography has a special status at the festival. It is inscribed in urban art as well as being a media tool so that the spirit of Fesman can be expressed in quite a number of sites in Dakar and other cities in Senegal.

Two distinct approaches are planned:

• PROJECT 1
The photographs selected will be reproduced on banners, canvas or tarpaulins in order to decorate the avenues, streets and squares in Dakar and provincial cities. The photographic works enable an exceptional and unedited tribute to urban landscape.
These photographs should illustrate primarily four themes:
- “urban landscape/rural landscape”
- “the human workforce”
- “Beauty and aesthetics”
- “Sports”
These themes are specific to illustrate everyday life, lifestyles and the aspirations of the black population worldwide.

• PROJECT 2 : Photography then creates an exceedingly specific work that is engraved as a visual symbol of Fesman.
This work is based on two compelling themes:
- “The United States of Africa”
- “The Dialogue between Africa and the Diaspora”
This specific work suggests following the schema below:
- Selection of different photographic works of Africa and the Diaspora.
- In a frank and committed discussion, photographers were asked to look for an African or Diasporan visual artist or a designer with whom they could form a duo team. For the theme of the United States of Africa, the duo teams will be associated with artists from different linguistic backgrounds (For example, a French photographer and an English-speaking designer or even an English-speaking photographer and a Lusophone visual artist).
Regarding the theme on the Diaspora, the first artist would be African and the second, a native-born Diasporan.
The dialogue between the two artists in each duo team is captured by the media prints in large format (between 4 and 30 m2) in which a photographic work will be displayed, in a percentage that will be determined at a later date, and the remaining area will contain the reinterpretation of this photograph by the second artist in the duo team. The work by the designer or the visual artist can be compared here to that of a DJ who explores the work of a musician. The objective is to ensure that the public understands that the finished work is the fruit of the dialogue between the two artists.
We enthusiastically hope that this methodology will bring forth striking works that illustrate the creative force of the black culture.
