Dance
danseIn Africa, dance is the traditional expression of individual and collective emotion. From Malian spiritual dances to Tchebe stilt dances, the guedra of Saharan countries, etc., nothing can compare with African dance in terms of power and creativity, rhythm and diversity, which reveal to the world a whole new vision of the body in motion. In the Americas, African dances invented new gestures and rhythms in Brazil and the Caribbean, displaying to the world their unrivalled creativity and generosity throughout the 20th century. The soul of Africa and a universal and immediate language, its dances are the purest state of African poetry. Today, after having conquered International stages and festivals of contemporary and tradi-contemporary fashions, black dance has reached new heights in its perpetual re-emergence.

Fesman 2009

FESMAN 2009 is aiming to be a showcase for the phenomena of mixing different choreographic styles. From traditional to contemporary dance via jazz, hip-hop, capoeira, bachata and salsa, the Festival is seeking to enhance creativity and open the way for a flourishing, diverse identity. It offers a stage where several disciplines will be able to meet and confront one another in one of the remaining vestiges of a living performance, modifying both traditional and body techniques. With a range of creations by black artists from communities around the world, FESMAN 2009 wants to become the stage for black dance which has evolved differently from its original source on the African continent.

Artists both established and new from over 80 countries will compete not only for a place amongst the greats, but also to defend their countries of origin. Internationally acclaimed artists will be invited to give their support through major performances, adding a prestigious grand finale to the festivities. Beyond the entertaining, high quality shows, FESMAN 2009 and its theme of renaissance hopes to incite amongst its audiences an individual and collective introspection, a series of questions which will nurture wide-reaching reflection on universal human relations.
